Sofianna Apartments is situated in Pathos Cyprus. Unusually for such a small self-catering complex, this place has got almost as many facilities as a big hotel. It's got two bars, a gym and the one of the biggest children's playgrounds in Cyprus. Plus it's won 13 awards in the last 25 years – testament to the fact that it goes all out to impress.

On the pool front, there are three to select from. The main one comes complete with a bridge, a whirlpool bath and a host of fancy water features – everything from fountains to waterfalls. There's a dinky children's pool that's faultless for paddling. And this compact complex has even got its own indoor pool. It's heated all year round and it's home to a whirlpool bath and sauna, too.

As for the apartments, they're simple, straightforward and decked out in red, blue and white. They come with air-conditioning, satellite TV and a balcony. Not to mention a kitchen equipped with a kettle, toaster, fridge and microwave - handy if you're travelling with children. And while the apartment blocks aren't much to look at, the grounds are gorgeous. Cue banana trees, citrus groves and some ornamental stone-work such as an old olive press.
